Low-Arctic
Nain addresses the need for new housing and community infrastructure in a Low Arctic coastal settlement where steep terrain, sensitive landscapes, and a harsh climate limit conventional development. Situated at the edge of town and adjacent to protected natural areas, the project is shaped by the need to build carefully within a landscape of strong cultural and ecological value to the local Inuit community.
A climate-driven, minimal-impact approach allows buildings to step with the natural topography, minimising rock blasting and preserving the terrain. Studies of wind, sun, and microclimate inform building placement and orientation, creating sheltered outdoor spaces and improving comfort throughout the year.
A compact shared community house anchors the housing cluster, supporting social life and everyday activities while buildings follow the terrain with minimal ground intervention.
Housing volumes step with the natural topography, while a shared community house is carefully integrated into the landscape, creating sheltered outdoor spaces and minimising impact on the terrain.
