Lagunen II responds to the challenge of expanding Norway’s largest shopping centre in Bergen’s rain-heavy coastal climate while strengthening its relationship to the surrounding neighbourhood. Located in a residential district south of the city, the project reimagines the traditional mall as an open, urban meeting place and a warm, light-filled extension of the public realm.

The 15,000 m² mixed-use extension addresses this challenge through an inside-out structure defined by openness and access. Public-facing cafés and restaurants open directly to surrounding streets and the adjacent square, while retail occupies the middle levels and offices are placed above. A central atrium draws daylight deep into the building, supporting activity and orientation throughout the day.

Transparent façades open the building to the street, creating a welcoming and active presence in the surrounding public realm. Restaurants and cafés at ground level open directly toward public squares and pedestrian routes.

A bold cantilevered roof forms a generous canopy, with warm wooden soffits that shelter visitors from rain and wind.
