Lagunen II responds to the challenge of expanding Norway's largest shopping centre in Bergen's rain-heavy coastal climate while strengthening the centre's relationship to its surrounding neighbourhood.
Located in a residential district south of the city, the project reimagines the traditional mall as an open, urban meeting place and a warm, light-filled extension of the public realm.
The 15,000 m² mixed-use extension addresses this challenge through an inside-out structure defined by openness and access. Public-facing cafés and restaurants open directly onto surrounding streets and the adjacent square, while retail occupies the middle levels and offices are placed above. A central atrium draws daylight deep into the building, supporting activity and orientation throughout the day.
By day the façades read as thresholds; by night, as lanterns — the interior life of the centre made visible to the street.
A cantilevered roof forms a canopy, with wooden soffits that shelter visitors from rain and wind.
A glass plinth, a louvred mass — public life at street level, the working building held quietly above.
The building leans outward to meet the street, offering shelter before entry.
Restaurants and cafés at ground level open directly toward public squares and pedestrian routes. Careful attention to detailing defines the interior, where wooden ceilings, integrated lighting, and precise junctions create a calm spatial experience.
